5 Must Visit Places Near Ottawa

With summer in full swing and COVID-19 restrictions starting to lift, Ottawans are ready to hit the road and get back to enjoying the great outdoors. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect getaway, check out these 5 must-visit destinations near Ottawa that make for the perfect family adventure this summer.

Gatineau Park

Just across the bridge lies one of the most spectacular parks in all of Canada – Gatineau Park. With over 350 square kilometres of green space, trails, and beaches, it’s the best spot to hike, canoe or swim on your day off. You can also camp here at one of the three lakes, rent a yurt or cabin. If you’ve never been to the park before, we recommend you start at the Visitor Centre in Chelsea where on-site agents will provide you with all the information you need for an enjoyable visit.

Calabogie

Another must-visit destination near Ottawa is the Calabogie lake. Here you can rent a quaint cottage and slip away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a while.  Best known for its exceptional skiing hills at Calabogie Peaks, the area is also a great place to paddle, hike, and camp in the summer. The town is also home to the Eagles Nest Trail that leads to the lookout offering beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding lakes and rolling hillside.

Sleepy Cedars

Just south of Ottawa in Greely is one of the area’s best family campgrounds, Sleepy Cedars. With over 130 sites hidden away in a stunning cedar forest, 9-hole mini putt, a children’s play area, and a recreation hall on-site, it’s the perfect weekend getaway. Campers can also take part in a number of activities including horseshoes, wagon rides, golf tournaments, live entertainment and theme nights.

The 1000 Islands

If you’re looking for another adventure only a short drive from Ottawa, the 1000 Islands area in Brockville awaits you. With over 200 shipwrecks and hidden inlets to explore, Brockville is renowned for its exceptional scuba diving. If you’re not one for the water, there’s also golf, antique shopping, and many delicious restaurants to discover here as well.

Cornwall

Perched on the Saint Lawrence right across from the USA, sits the town of Cornwall, one of Canada’s earliest settlements. People from all over head to this area to hike the Glengarry trails, bird watch, golf, boat, and to explore the expansive waterfront area. There’s also plenty of indoor attractions here too, making it the perfect family getaway any time of the year.
